Biography

John (Goose) Goss was born in Lincolnshire, England.

John (Goose) Goss migrated from England to New Zealand.

John was born about 1821 in Martin, Lincolnshire, England.

As of 1861 he was a farmer of 112 acres at Branston, Lincolnshire. He had three children at this time by his housekeeper Laurinda Norfolk; they would never marry. The children were known as Norfolk at this time. ^[1]

As of 1871 he lived at the same farm still; the children were now known as Goose and would continue as such. ^[2]

The family emigrated to New Zealand on the Hermione arrived 17 Dec 1878 at Taranaki. ^[3]

The family took the surname Goss at some stage in New Zealand.

John was living in Hastings as of 1894, although Laurinda and their children were living in Wanganui. ^[4]

John passed away 23 Jun 1896 at Napier Hospital. According to an affidavit by his daughter Emma, his living issue at this time were:

• Emma Gumbley, wife of Arthur Gumbley, clerk, Wanganui.
• Mary Goose, Wanganui.
• John Goose, Wanganui.
• William Goose, Wanganui.
• George Goose.

Emma states that John and Laurinda Norfolk were married and these children were products of the marriage -- however the 1871 UK census and UK birth records say otherwise. ^[5]

Research Notes

1888 clipping talks about John Goose's property in Hastings , so he may have moved there as early as 1888.
