Pedro Carlos Gordon y Prendergast was born on 17th February 1852 at Jerez de la Frontera, Cádiz, Andalucía, Spain. He was the third surviving son of Spanish-born parents of Scottish descent, Charles Gordon and Elena Prendergast. When he was fourteen, Pedro's family returned to Scotland when his father succeeded as the ninth laird of Wardhouse and Kildrummie, Aberdeenshire.
He became a Catholic priest in 1885 and, later, a professor at the Stonyhurst College.
