Biography

Alexander Gordon was born in 1760 in Ireland to Mary Gordon. He married Sarah Lee the daughter of John Lee and Mary Cassells.

This Protestant Irish-born Alexander Gordon arrived in 1767 at Charleston, South Carolina, with his mother Mary, whose name was recorded once as "Nancy" on the Captain's list for the ship James & Mary [1], but as "Mary" on her land petition for 150 acres (at the same Council meeting).

Alexander was 7 and Nancy Gordon was 25 (thus giving her birth date as 1742) when they are listed as passengers on The James & Mary ship, leaving from Larne, Ireland.

Her plat, grant and Memorial gave her name as Mary Gordon.[2] Her grant was on Bear Creek of the Wateree River in Craven County (later Fairfield), South Carolina.

Also Capt. John Turner, his captain in the militia, arrived in SC from Ireland on 31 Dec 1767 on the ship James and Mary as did James Young (b. 1760), who married Agnes Lee, together with Alexander Gordon (b. 1760), who arrived with his mother Mary.

Alexander Gordon served in the 1st Regiment under Capt. Felix Warley and Gen. Pinckney, a full-time military unit in the Continental Line, recruited solely in the Low Country, muster roll 11 Dec 1782 (enlisted 11 Aug 1782):[3]

Gordon Alexander R20375 enlisted in the First Regiment on 11 Aug 1782 under Capt. Felix Warley. N.A. 853; (Moved to Tenn.)[4]

He received £18.4 for his service on the SC line in Jul 1782-Jul 1783.[needs source] His service in the First Company under Capt. Felix Warley is documented in 2 muster rolls, one dated 11 Dec 1782[5] and another dated Mar 1783, citing 2 years & 5 months of continual service.[6]

About Captain Felix Warley in the military: we find Capt. Warley serving under Col. Richard Winn after June 1781.:

The first unit he served in as a captain in SC was the 3rd Regiment from 1776 to 1780. Notes: Was a Lieutenant. Promoted to Captain 5/24/1776. POW at the Fall of Charleston. Exchanged June 1781. A Captain under Col. Richard Winn (Fairfield Regiment) after his exchange.
