Biography

Alexander was born about 1445 second son of Alexander Seton earl of Huntly and his second wife Elizabeth Crichton.[1] His father adopted the surname Gordon in the 1450's

Alexander married Beatrice Hay, said to be daughter of William, Earl of Errol. [2]

Alexander Gordon and Beatrice Hay had issue:

  • George his heir
  • William of Netherdale
  • Janet who married Thomas Fraser, Lord Lovat in 1493.
  • daughter who married Mortimer, the laird of Craigievar
  • daughter who married Ogilvy of Clova. Katherine Gordon married James Ogilvy of Clova about 1515.
  • Beatrice who married Alexander Garden of Durlaithers The Balbithan MSS says (she) the fourth daughter married the Laird of Derlaithers. [3]

King James III by deed of gift granted a Royal Charter of the lands of Abergeldie to Alexander Gordon on 26 Dec 1482 [4]

On 30 Sep 1485, Alexander Gordon of Midmar was set a tack from David, Abbot of Arberbrothoc, of the great tithes of the churches of Coull and Kinernie. [5]

George, Earl of Huntly, on 22nd November 1488, granted to Sir Alexander Gordon of Midmar,his brother-german, a charter of the lands of Tullitermont, for faithful service done and to be done to him during his life.[6]

By a Royal Charter dated at Edinburgh on 28 Jan 1488/89, Sir Alexander Gordon of Midmar was granted the lands of Eastoun in Cromar upon the resignation of John Rutherford of Tarland. [7]

By a Royal Charter of confirmation dated at Inverness on 9 Nov 1501, Alexander resigned the Barony of Midmar into the Earl of Huntly's hands, and received it again on account of brotherly affection. [8]

He was present in Edinburgh on on 26 Jan 1502/03 when he witnessed a Charter of sale in favour of his nephew, Alexander earl of Huntly. [9]

By an Indenture in 1503 he entered an agreement with James Lord Ogilvy arranging a preliminary contract between Janet daughter of Ogilvy and Alexander son and heir of George Gordon ygr of Midmar whom failing to James his brother when old enough or failing her her younger sister Marion[10]

On 17 Mar 1503/04, Sir Alexander was set a tak of the lands of Strathdee and Cromar. [11] Sir Alexander died about the close of 1504. Beatrice Hay received her widows terce in October 1504.[12]

The Last Name at Birth should almost certainly be Seton. The family did not adopt the name Gordon until about 1457. See his father's profile and the profile of his brother George.

Gordon-2196 and Gordon-3518 appear to represent the same person because: same name, same death date, 1st of Albergeldie, right parents, Hay is wife.
