Ida Carol Gordon Shafer May 24, 1904-April 9, 2008 Ida Carol Gordon SHAFER, 103, formerly of 5556 N. Indiana 25, Rochester, died at 4:15 a.m. Wednesday at Wynnfield Crossing, Rochester. She was born in Fulton County to Frank and Sophia Tetzlaff Gordon and was a lifetime resident of the county. She married Verl C. Shafer on Dec. 8, 1923, in St. Joseph, Mich. He preceded her in death on April 18, 1986. Fulton County's eldest citizen, Ida accomplished many things during her lifetime spanning more than a century. As a youngster attending Rochester High School, Ida traveled to school driving her horse and buggy. At the age of 101, she was proud of holding an Indiana driver's license and loved driving her blue Buick. She liked to travel across the country from coast to coast. Ida enjoyed being a homemaker. She was an excellent seamstress, sewing for five generations. For many summers, her garden yielded produce she canned and froze for her family. One of her greatest joys was the flower gardens in her yard that many admired. An avid reader, Ida looked forward to reading stories about our county's past authored by Mr. Jack K. Overmyer in The Rochester Sentinel. Amish books and novels were among her favorite books. She was a member of Walnut Church of the Brethren since 1927. Survivors include a daughter, Betty Rouch and husband Marvin, Rochester; a son, Arthur Shafer and wife Marilyn, Elkhart; six grandchildren, David Shafer, Gary Shafer, Sandra Wallin, Karen Beck, Carol Ann Rouch and Patricia Rahrig; six great-grandchildren; her brother, Lester Gordon, Rochester; and several nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death with her parents and husband were an infant daughter, Carol June; three sisters, Pauline Cranmer, Josephine Warner and Mabel Umbaugh; and three brothers, Howard Gordon, Arthur Gordon and Carl Gordon. Her funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Good Family Funeral Home, 1200 W. 18th St., Rochester, with the Rev. Robert Rice officiating. Burial will be at IOOF Cemetery, Rochester.
