Biography

There is no evidence that this Elizabeth Gordon existed.

Research Notes

Elizabeth Gordon is sometimes shown as the daughter of James Gordon, who was born 1573 in Wigton, Scotland, and his wife Margaret Vans. There is no evidence they had a daughter Elizabeth, and therefore that relationship has been severed.

Facts sometimes reported for this person include:

  • Name: Elizabeth Jane Gordon
  • Birth: 1629, Dumbarton, Dunbartonshire, Scotland

For a possible duplicate of this Elizabeth, see Elizabeth Gorton, b. 1603

1629 Birth

No record of the birth of Elizabeth Gordon has been found, nor any other record establishing her existence. She is widely reputed to be the first wife of Ninian Beall. Her existence, or the existence of someone like her, is plausible because Ninian had time in his life to have a marriage in Scotland prior to emigrating to Maryland.

Elizabeth Gordon was born in 1629 in Dumbarton, Dunbartonshire, Scotland [1]

1646 Marriage to Ninian Beall

Elizabeth Heterick states the following but without a source: "Colonel Ninian Beall of Largo, Ligensheim Fyffe, Scotland, born 1625, married Elizabeth Gordon of that place." [2]

In 1646 in Largo, Fife, Scotland she married Colonel Ninian- Beall I (1625–1717) [1]

1655 Ninian Emigrates

Heterick reported that Ninian Beall emigrated to the Province of Maryland about 1655. [2] She did not specify whether Elizabeth Gordon accompanied him.

1668 Death

She died in 1668 in Largo, Fife, Scotland [1]

Children

Heterick also reported that Ninian had at least one son before coming to America, as shown by the preface to the will of his son Thomas, which is "whereas it doth please God by his Providence to cause me to leave the place and land of my nativity and intending God willing to leave for England if the Almighty spares me, if not then;" [2] Heterick's interpretation of this sentence is that Thomas was referring to leaving from Scotland, the land of his nativity, and travel to England. But the will was written in Maryland, so a more logical interpretation is that Thomas was referring to Maryland, the land of his nativity, from which he would travel to England.

Such an interpretation and suitable dates would make Thomas a Maryland-born child of Ninian and his wife Ruth.

Other sources report other children for Ninian and Elizabeth Gordon. These reports are generally resolved when the likely dates of the children's births are considered.

Snodderly shows three children:

  1. John Beall(1647–1711) was born about 1647 • Largo, Fifeshire, Scotland. [1]
  2. Thomas Beall(1647–1725) was born about 1647 • Largo, Fife, Scotland [1]
  3. Sarah Rachel Beall(1649–1734) was born about 1649 • Largo, Fife, Scotland [1] Note': first and middle names like "Sarah Rachel" were extremely unusual in this time period and sometimes reflect the conflation of two people into one.

Gordon-9334 and Gordon-5219 appear to represent the same person because: Both of these Elizabeth Gordons are persons without adequate documentation, said to be married to Ninian Beall while he was in Scotland. Only one profile for Elizabeth Gordon is needed as a place to collect documentation for her.

I have removed NInian Beall as a spouse -- there is much legendary material about an Elizabeth Gordon married to him before he left Scotland, but no adequate documentation. Elizabeth Gordon is mentioned in the narrative, with a link. This is a duplicate profile to that Elizabeth, so I've proposed a merge of the two Elizabeth Gordon profiles.

"Elizabeth Gordon" is often referred to in secondary writings, but nobody has been able to establish that she ever existed -- or that she ever married Ninian Beall -- or that she immigrated to Maryland. I propose that her profile be retained as a "legend" citing where references to her are found, but de-linking her from Ninian. Any problems with my doing this?

I'm working on Bealls, Magruders and Pottengers. This person is probably a myth, but we'll see when I'm able to add some biographical information and sources!
