Biography

Mary Elizabeth was born in 1861 and soon thereafter, lost her father. Her mother, Sarah then remarried the widower, Joel Nance in 1862. Half-sisters, Alice Maniza Nance b. 1863 and Margaret Caroline Nance b. 1865 soon followed. Then tragedy struck again. Her mother, Sarah passed away, perhaps during childbirth. The following year, 1866 Joel married Lucinda Anderson b. 1832. Mary Elizabeth Gordon remained living in the Joel Nance household and was recorded in the 1870 Jackson County Census as a nine-year old.

Mary Elizabeth married Tilford King in 1878 and together they raised nine children in Alto Pass, Union County, Illinois.

In retirement Mary and Tilford relocated to Shamrock, Creek County, Oklahoma. Three of their children Bessie, William, and Fred joined them as well and were recorded in the 1920 Creek County Oklahoma Census.
