Ilse Gordon was born in Hamburg, Germany in 1904. She was the eldest of the three children born to Max Gordon and Else Stein. She was frail but healthy and as a young child she was very attached to her mother but shy of strangers. Ilse's Aunt Edith cared for her for several months around the time of her brother's birth, when she was two years old. Ilse recalled Edith giving her a navy blue wool skirt when she was about 15, and clothes were very difficult to get. Ilse also recalled Edith giving her money which enabled her to have a holiday when she was a university student. When things got very difficult for Jews in Germany in 1939, Ilse was able to emigrate to Colombia South America with other members of her family.
