Ellen was the second daughter of John Gordon and Elizabeth Burnett, born in Mosgiel. She was known as Nellie.
After the family moved to farm new land in Opotiki, due to her father's asthma, Nellie was sent back to Dunedin for her education. Her older sister, Elizabeth, was with her.
Nellie married Norman Ker, who had emigrated to New Zealand in 1882. Norman was a Scotsman from Berwickshire, and the son of a Presbyterian minister. The wedding took place at Nellie's family home in Opotiki on 15 February 1900. The minister was Rev E Worboys.
Nellie and Norman had five children: Stan, Jessie, Nellie, Charlie, and Norman.[1]
Their eldest daughter, Jessie, was married to Ralph Vivian Servat on 24 June 1931 at Epsom Presbyterian Church. Nellie and Norman were living in Whakatane at the time. [2]
Norman (Jr) also married, as per this birth notice : "Ker - on Dec 15th at Annexe, Whakatane, to Mr and Mrs Norman Ker, a daughter."[3] But Norman (Jr) died in 1938, and he is buried in Hillsborough Cemetery.
Nellie died in Whakatane in 1964 the day before her 89th birthday.
