Biography

Dorcas Gore's, sometimes spelled Goree, husband was Asa Darby based on an application to the SAR by a descendant of Asa. She is mentioned in Asa's will as Dorcas Darby.

Dorcas was born in Maryland based on colonial census records. Her father, James Manning Gore, is listed as living in Frederick County, MD, in 1756 and 1760. James is listed as James M. in 1756 and James (no middle initial) in 1760.

In a November 1819 petition for the land of James Manning Gore, Dorcas is listed as a daughter who is married to Asa Darby.

Since her husband, Asa Darby, was in Maryland in 1778, it is possible they were married in Maryland before moving to SC. Their first child, Nancy, was born in December 1780.
