Born in Loris, S.C., she was a daughter of the late Walter Porter Gore and the late Ida Hardee Gore.

Mrs. Benson was a graduate of Coker College. She was a charter member of Alice Drive Baptist Church and an active member of the Friendship Bible class. She was a member of the Trian Club, Cotillion Club and the Tuesday Afternoon Club. Mrs. Benson was a devoted and loving wife, mother and grandmother.

• Surviving are three sons, Samuel Arden Benson Jr. and wife, Schira, of Atlanta, Ga.; Robert Luther Benson and wife, Cindy, of Sumter; and Donald Walter Benson and wife, Mary Carlisle, of Columbia; a daughter, Pam Benson McDowell and husband, Phillips, of Columbia; a sister, Dorothy Gore Lay of Loris; seven grandchildren, Wesley Benson and wife, Jill, Courtenay McDowell, Robert Benson, Catherine McDowell, Arden Benson, Strahley Benson and Carlisle Benson.
