John was a Surveyor

JOHN GORE was born 1816 in Monroe County, Virginia, the seventh child and second son of Joseph Gore and Martha Pine. His father was of English, German, and Portuguese heritage while his mother was imbued with English, Irish, and Scottish. In an already bustling household, his eldest sister, Caty, undoubtedly assisted in raising him and their siblings Celia, Delilah, Nancy, Rena, and Jimmy. Before long, John had another four siblings to play with: Elijah, Levi, Becky, and Martha. The Gore family all came to the Clear Fork of Guyandotte in Logan County, near the present site of Oceana, in the late 1820s.

In or near the near the year 1837 he married Margaret Jane Dingess, a daughter of John and Chloe (Farley) Dingess. Margaret was affectionately called "Peggy" by all who knew her. John and Peggy's first daughter was born in the same year, and they named her Chloe to honor Peggy's mother.

On December 5, 1838, John and Peggy, along with James and Sally (Dingess) Butcher, sold their two shares being 40 acres of an undivided tract on Guyandotte River opposite and above the mouth of Crawley Creek, still occupied by John Dingess, to Peggy and Sally's brother, Julius.[1]

OBITUARY (Logan County Banner, Oct. 9, 1895) Death of John Gore Died, at the residence of his son, Leander Gore, on Hart's Creek, at 7 o'clock last Saturday evening, John Gore, in his eightieth year.

No man in Logan County was better known or more beloved than Mr. Gore. He was distinctly a man of the people and a friend to every one.

He was, for a long time, Surveyor of the county, and only laid down the compass and chain when he become too infirm to climb our hills.

Mr. Gore was married in early life to Miss Margaret Dingess, who has preceded him to the grave. He leaves to survive him three sons, Floyd S., Harvey and Leander, and five daughters, Mrs. Jackson Mullins, Mrs. Squire Toney, Mrs. Guy Lawson, Mrs. Anthony Lawson and Mrs. Bryan McDonald.

We are glad to learn that while his suffering were great, he dying with catarrh of the stomach, that he bore his sufferings with christian fortitude, and met calmly the blow of the death angel.

He was one of the links that bound us to the past, one of the old men who delighted in telling what this country was nearly a century ago. He has, however, joined the great majority, and is once more in company with the friends of his youth. And we should not mourn him, but rather rejoice that his is free from the ills and pains which are the heritage of old age. Mourn not for him, you shall soon meet him again. https://brandonraykirk.wordpress.com/tag/john-gore/

However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:

I am working on Joseph B Gore and his resources and was looking at the 1850 US Census for Logan, Logan, WV and noticed there is a child named John J age 9 who is the same age as Joseph B age 9 on the census. I was wondering if they might be twins since twins run in the family. When I looked at the 1860 census there is a notation that John J age 19 and Joseph B age 19 are twins!
