Lt. Gen. Richard Gorges of Kilbrew, co. Meath, baptized in 1662, son of Robert Gorges. Called "Richard Gorges, the Elder" to distinguish him from his cousin Richard Gorges, the Younger, son of Hamilton Gorges. 
One source states his mother was Catherine, daughter of Sir Adam Loftus. 
Richard was M.P. for Coleraine in 1703, returned for Bandon and for Ratoath. In 1713 he sat for Ratoath and again in 1715.
He married 1st in 1704 to Nicola Sophia Hamilton, daughter of Hugh Hamilton of Glenawley, and widow of Sir Tristram Beresford. Nicola died in 1713.
He married 2nd Dorothy Stopford, Countess Dowager of Meath, widow of Edward. Dorothy died on 10 Aug 1728.
"In 1695, the rental of Lieutenant-Colonel Gorges' estate [in co. Londonderry], leased from the Merchant Taylors, was 420 [pounds], and in 1695, 485 [pounds]."
