In May or June 1804, John Gorham was brought by his father from Montgomery Co., NY, to the Town of Elbridge (then part of the Town of Camillus), Onondaga Co. N.Y., where he lived off and on for many years. He served in the War of 1812 for about three months, 27 Aug. to 8 Nov. 1814, at Buffalo and Fort Erie in Capt. John Richardson's Company in the regiment of riflemen commanded by Col. Hugh W. Dobbins, New York Militia.
After his discharge from service, John Gorham undoubtedly returned to his home in Elbridge, where he probably married his first wife the following year and where he was enumerated in the Federal Censuses of 1820, 1830, and 1840. However, in July 1824, he was residing in the Town of Brutus, Cayuga Co., N.Y. but in July 1825, he was back in Elbridge. About 1831 he settled in the Town of Savannah, Wayne Co., N.Y. where he had purchased on 20 Oct. 1830 a farm. John Gorham returned to his former home in the Town of Elbridge in 1837 but in 1846 returned to live the rest of his life in the Town of Savannah. John Gorham died at the home of his daughter, Amy Reed, in the Town of Savannah about one mile south of South Butler.
