Alexander Gorman was born October 22, 1836, in Chambersville, Indiana county, Pennsylvania, a son of David Gorman and Jane (George) Gorman. Alexander married Catherine Elizabeth Smith, daughter of John G. Smith and Maria Margaret (Winsheimer) Smith. Children of Alexander and Elizabeth include:
- William A. Gorman, born March 17, 1871, in Indiana county, Pennsylvania, died December 16, 1898
- Oren Smith Gorman, born June 3, 1873, died November 16, 1960, married Olive E. Kinter
