Biography

Mary Gorton was born at Warwick, October 31, 1673 at Warwick, Rhode Island, daughter of Benjamin Gorton and Sarah Carder. [1] [2] [3]

She married Samuel Greene at Warwick on January 24, 1694/5. [1] Samuel Greene was born on January 30, 1670/71, at Occupasuetuxet, youngest son of Deputy Governor John and Ann (Almy) Greene. [1] [2] [3] Samuel was a farmer and mill owner, Captain of the military company. He served as Deputy to the General Assembly, and Justice of the Peace. [2] [3]

Samuel died on September 18, 1720. [2] [3]

His widow Mary died on January 7, 1731/2. [1] [2] [3]

They are buried in the Captain Samuel Greene Lot, Warwick, Kent, Rhode Island. Her inscription reads: Mary Widow of Capt. Samuel Greene and Daughter of Capt. Benjamin Gorton Born 31 Oct. 1673 Died 7 Jan. 1731 [4]

  1. William Greene, born at Warwick March 16, 1695; married, December 30, 1719, his second cousin, Catharine Greene, born March 31, 1698 and died November 28, 1777, daughter of Captain Benjamin and Susanna (Holden) Greene. William died in office on February 25, 1758. [1] [2] [3]
  2. Mary Greene, born at Warwick August 25, 1698, died October 28, 1739; married, December 31, 1719 [1], Thomas Fry, Jr., born February 16, 1691, died 1782, son of Thomas and Welthian' (Greene) Fry. Thomas, Jr., married 2nd, November 11, 1740, Eleanor Greene, daughter of Richard and Eleanor (Sayles) Greene. [2]
  3. Samuel Greene, born at Warwick October 22, 1700; died September 15, 1780; married Sarah Coggershall on March 11, 1724/5. [1] Sarah, daughter of Joshua and Mercy (Nichols) Coggershall, was born December 22, 1704 and died on February 3, 1790. [2] [3]
  4. Benjamin Greene, born at Warwick January 5, 1702; married, September 2, 1730, Almy (or Mary Almy) Angell. [1] [2] She was daughter of James and Susannah (Wilkinson) Angell. Benjamin was a mariner and moved to North Parish (now Montville), New London, Connecticut. Almy died in about 1740, and he married 2nd, Margaret Strickland, daughter of Peter Strickland. [2]
