Biography

"Representative Men and Old Families of Rhode Island" states that Nathan was a tailor and that he served in the Revolutionary War as a private in Capt. Thomas Rice's company. It says that he married Mary Pearce, with whom he had five children: Hulda, Joseph, Elder Benjamin, Nathan, and Isabel. In "Samuel Gorton and His Descendants[1] ", these children are listed along with two more, Mary and Israel.

A online transcript[2] states that Huldah was born in 1762 and married Stephen Briggs in 1780. These years are repeated in "The Life and Times of Samuel Gorton".

Research Notes

Nathan appears as head of household at Warwick in the 1774 census of Rhode Island[3]. The household distribution and inferred attributions are

  • one white male over 16: Nathan
  • two white males under 16: Joseph and either of sons Benjamin or Nathan
  • two white femalesover 16: Mary and unknown
  • one white female under 16: Hulda

The remaining children, should they be real, should have death dates before 1774 or birth dates after 1774.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Nathan by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Nathan:
