Note

From a letter of Klaus Gerwitz (of Hanau, Germany) to "Ida May and Bill" (in possession of John Gerwitz) dated 12 August 1992:

We descend from Spanish migrants, as far back as the 15th century. At that time they were still Catholic and going by the name of Gerwise of possibly Gerwese, but noblemen nevertheless. Those went to Austria. Some times laters, parts of them moved on to Prussia and in the process turned Protestant. They also changed their name to "von Gerwitz", more referring to the old main family tribe than to a possible town of village, as there is or was none by that name in that area. s all of my direct descendents [sic] are dead, I only remember a few things from my father and Grandfather. My Grandfather, by the way, had a complete family tree set-up which I remember him showing me which dated back to the Spaniards. Some of these notes I still recall. Unfortunately it all fell victim to one of the many air raids on Berlin during the Second World War. But as I recall, one of the original Gerwitz came from Austria and settled in a small town by the name of Stargard, district of Pomerania, county of Stettin (city by the same name), close to the Baltic Sea, in polish now called Szczencinski, as, since 1945, this part of the country belongs to Poland. This original Gerwitz had seven children, which later on went in to all parts of the world. They went to England, America, parts of Germania, etc. One of them came to Berlin whose direct descendent I am, in 5. generation. One went to Ansbach in southern Germany, who later on had a son by the name of Lorenz, as well as 4 daughters. Lorenz is the one that settled in or near St. Louis, MO and is already depicted in your data.
