Biography

It is highly likely that [1] for Private Joseph Gosnell (unmarried) 20 years old born in Spitalfields, Middlesex and serving at Chatham, Kent Archive reference HO107. Piece number 1611, Folio 456, Page 12 of the 1851 Census is the same man as the 65th was quartered in Chatham before deploying to NZ

Served 06 October 1851 to 17 October 1861 with the 65th Foot (2nd Yorkshire - N.Riding) with army service number 3714 as Sergeant. In 1861 he was stationed at Auckland, New Zealand. National Archives reference WO12 / 7440

"Service Number 2473 Sgt Gossnell Joseph London, Middlesex, Lab 171049 AK 171601 C SX" Which means he was with 65th and then listing under 99th Reg. Arrived on SX (Southern Cross) 11 Feb 1856 Wellington

He came to NZ with the British Army and stayed. He was married to Louisa and supported her role as Head Mistress of a school near Wairoa

"Friday, September 29. Transfer of Publican's License. — Upon the application of Joseph Gossnell, the license for the Royal York Hotel, was transferred to Henry Richmond."

Information from GGGrandson is that Joseph was in the Napier division of the 65th before being transferred to New Plymouth at the start of the Taranaki War. He married Lousia the same year he was discharged. He was a Publican and then became the second European policeman in Wairoa. His headstone is in the Old Wairoa Cemetery

From the Wairoa School Committee, asking sanction for the expenditure of £10 for a lavatory, and for .confirmation of Mr Gosnell's appointment as drill instructor. The board sanctioned the expenditure of £10 for a lavatory, and agreed that Mr Gosnell's salary should be paid from September 30, 1878 HAWKES BAY HERALD, VOLUME XXI, ISSUE 5321, 4 MARCH 1879
