Richard settled at Meranburn about 1874, on a property he named "The Downs". Before this (according to his daughter Doris) he managed a pickle factory for Joseph Underwood, the first of its kind in the colony. He also operated a wheelwrights shop at Wilberforce, was involved in sawmilling at Orange and farming at Millthorpe.
He was always involved in community affairs and helped establish the Gosper Downs School in 1888, which also served as a church. He was also a local Magistrate, a JP and a "bush vet".
After a forced sale of "The Downs" in 1908 he set up on "The Pride" at Eulimore Creek, near Eugowra, which was sold in 1916. Finally "Glenmount" at Walli, near Woodstock, was purchased and where he spent his last three years.
