Biography

  • Richard settled at Meranburn about 1874, on a property he named "The Downs". Before this (according to his daughter Doris) he managed a pickle factory for Joseph Underwood, the first of its kind in the colony. He also operated a wheelwrights shop at Wilberforce, was involved in sawmilling at Orange and farming at Millthorpe.

He was always involved in community affairs and helped establish the Gosper Downs School in 1888, which also served as a church. He was also a local Magistrate, a JP and a "bush vet". After a forced sale of "The Downs" in 1908 he set up on "The Pride" at Eulimore Creek, near Eugowra, which was sold in 1916. Finally "Glenmount" at Walli, near Woodstock, was purchased and where he spent his last three years.

Richard James Gosper was born on June 20, 1836 in Warren, New South Wales, Australia. [1]

Richard married twice:

  1. Ann Greentree on March 11, 1856 in Wilberforce, New South Wales, Australia. [2] Richard and Ann had at least 11 children together before she died in 1890.
  2. Mary Catherine Smith on November 25, 1891 in Molong, New South Wales, Australia. [3] Richard had a further 7 children with Mary; the youngest born in 1907.

Richard James Gosper passed away on August 7, 1919 in Cowra, New South Wales, Australia. [4] The following announcement appeared in the local newspaper:[5]

Mr. Richard H. Gosper (82) died at Walli this week. He was twice married and leaves 16 children.
