Biography

  • An obituary in Windsor and Richmond Gazette dated 26th February, 1932 reads:

MR. CHARLES SLOPER GOSPER It is our sad duty this week to record the death of Mr. Charles Sloper Gosper, a well-known identity of Macquarie-street, Windsor, at the age of 69 years, Although he had been a patient sufferer with lung trouble for many years - he could barely speak louder than a whisper at times - his death came as a surprise to his many friends, and the deepest sympathy is expressed, towards his widow, brothers and sister. He took seriously ill about a fortnight ago, and was removed to Windsor Hospital, where he passed away during the peaceful hours of Friday morning last. The late 'Charlie' Gosper, as he was popularly known to everyone, was born at Windsor and lived in the old town all his life. His father, the late William Thomas Gosper, will be remembered as a well-known auctioneer in the town over a quarter of a century ago. Forty-four years ago the deceased was married to Harriet Fitch, and they lived in the two-storied building in Macquarie-street along with the former's brother, Mr. James Gosper. Unassuming in manner, and always genial, despite his affliction, the late 'Charlie' Gosper won the respect and esteem of all with whom he came in contact. His straight forwardness and kindly nature earned for him the goodwill of all sections of the community. He lived among horses all his life, and had come in contact at his brother's stables in Macquarie-street and resting paddocks on South Creek with some of Australia's champions. Indeed, it would be difficult to find a man who knew more about thoroughbreds and could handle them better than the late 'Charlie' Gosper. Besides the Widow the deceased leaves four brothers and a sister, viz., Messrs James, William and Frederick Gosper (Windsor), Mr. Sydney Gosper (Roseville) and Mrs. McQuade (Windsor). The funeral took place on Saturday afternoon, the remains being laid to rest in St. Matthew's Church of England cemetery, Windsor. rev. N. Jenkyn, who had attended the deceased during his illness, performed the last sad rites, and Mr. Chandler was the undertaker.
