Biography

John Walker Goss was born on October 16, 1814, in Albemarle County, Virginia. He was the son of John Goss and Jane Walker.

At the age of 24, John married Polydora Eugenia Lewis on January 14, 1839 in Staunton, Augusta, Virginia, when she was 21. They had ten children - Mary Preston, Jane Walker, William Walker, Lynn Lewis, John Preston, Susan Massie, Anne Montgomery Peyton, Charles Thomson, Eugenia Byrd, and Lawrence Hamilton.[1]

In 1840, John and Polydora and their first child lived in Fredericksville, Albemarle, Virginia, in a household that also included another male 20-29 and 23 slaves (11M; 12F).[2] In 1850 and 1860, the couple lived with their children in Albemarle County, where they were farming in 1850 and John was sheriff in 1860.[3][4] In 1850, they owned 20 slaves, while in 1860, they owned only one (or perhaps three).[5][6] In 1870, the family lived on a farm in Fredericksville, Albemarle, Virginia.[7]

Polydora died in April 1871. In 1880, John lived with several children in Rivanna, Albemarle, Virginia, and was the county clerk.[8]

John died on March 16, 1883, in Albemarle County, Virginia.[9][10] He was buried at Goss Family Cemetery in Stony Point, Albemarle, Virginia.[11]
