Elizabeth Goss was born about 1855[1] in Devon, England.
She emigrated to New Zealand in 1874 aboard the 'Cathcart', landing at Lyttelton on 28th August. The passenger lists records as being from Devon and aged 20y.[2]
A remarkable passage was made by the fine iron clipper Cathcart to Lyttelton in 1874. A ship of 1,387 tons, built four years previously by Robert Steel, of Greenock, she sailed from London with 481 Government immigrants on the 11th June, and from the Downs three days later, making the passage in 70 days 12 hours to the Snares, and arriving at Lyttelton on the 29th August, 76 days from the Downs to port. The equator was crossed on the 21st day out. On the 28th July she made a run of 304 miles, and the following day 293.[3]
Elizabeth married Graham Bruere on 24 December 1874.[4] They had eleven children before his death in 1896. Their children were: Graham (1876), Alice (1878), George (1880), Charles (1882), Robert (1884), Albert (1885), Frederick (1888), Bertha (1891), May (1892), Jane (1894), Anne (1896).
She married (2nd) Thomas Boyd at St John's in Balcairn on 20 February 1902.[5]

Elizabeth passed away in 1934[7] and is buried in Balcairn Cemetery.[8]
