Nicholas was baptised on 25 May 1808 at Charles the Martyr, Plymouth, the son of William & Eleanor Goss.
In 1819 he was admitted to a school in Plymouth. It noted he was the youngest of 5 children living of William & Elanor Goss. Three of the children were unprovided for as the father, a shoemaker had very uncertain wages.
William Goss and Elenor Bardens were married in Bigbury, Devon on 23 Nov 1792. While there isn't a proven connection, it seems likely there is a family link between Willam and Prothesia Savery Goss, a noteable Baptist figure and author of the 19th C, whose father, Nicholas was also from Bigbury, but moved to Modbury.
At the time of his marriage to Susanna in East Stonehouse in 1824 (he would have been 16), he was a Seaman on "HMS Jessure" (almost certainly HMS Jaseur, an 18 gun brig-sloop). At the baptism of his daughter Louisa in 1830, his occupation was seaman, so he was apparently still with the Royal Navy at that time. By the 1836 (baptism of ? Goss, probably George), Nicholas was a cordwainer (shoemaker), presumably a trade he learned from his father (unclear how he would have had time to do an apprenticeship betwen entering school at age 10 and leaving the Navy). For the 1841 Census he was living in Richmond St St Andrews, Plymouth. He was still living in Richmond St in Feb 1845 when 3 of his children were baptised. With 3 baptisms on the same day in the established church, this lends credibility to family tradition of being non-conformists (probably Baptists). For the 1861 census he was living at 4 Wyndham St, St Andrew, Plymouth and was a shoemaker, as he was for the 1871 census when he and Susan were at 21 Wyndham St. Interestingly, his daughter Rosina Gilbert) and family are living in the same house in 1871.
He passed away on 6 Oct 1872 and was buried at the Ford Park cemetery, Plymouth on 13 Oct 1872. At time of death he had been living at 12 Wyndham St East, Plymouth. The informant for his death was R Bending, 6 Willow St, Plymouth (a nephew?).[1]
