Capt Josiah Gosse sealed out of St. John's, Newfoundland in wooden ships before the days of steam. When he was sixteen he narrowly escaped drowning in a storm in the Strait of Belle Isle. Capt Gosse went to the Pacific coast in the 1880s, settling in Victoria. He sealed for a number of years, and after the sealing business closed by international treaty, joined the coast service of Canadian Pacific for four years, following which he was made keeper of a lighthouse in Esquimalt Harbour, a position he held until the light was made automatic.
