Biography

Anne was born in 1830. She is the daughter of William Gosse and Dianna French.

Gosse, Ann, Born Oct 19 1830 in Spaniard's Bay, Newfoundland, Died Mar 22 1917 in Spaniard's Bay, Newfoundland[1] (source uncertain - year is different from this profile record due to lack of sources)

Ann married William Vokey (abt.1827-1917). They lived in Spaniards Bay, Newfoundland and had nine children William, Solomon, Sarah, Diana Vokey, John Vokey, Azariah Vokey, Catherine Vokey, twins Elizabeth Ann Vokey and Isaac Vokey.

Research Notes

1. William and Ann had nine children, however, sources have not been found for the oldest three ( William, Solomon and Sarah), or for their marriage date of December 22 , 1853.

There is a birth record[2] for "Ann Goss" that indicates that she was born on 19 Oct, 1830 in Spaniard's Bay, however, the parents listed are "Robert and Dianna Goss", (not "William and Dianna Gosse"). Although the different spelling of the surname isn't uncommon, and may be simply sloppy record keeping or similar, I suspect that this means that either: a) her father's given name is Robert, or his name is Robert William (or William Robert) and at the time of Ann's birth, he gave Robert as his name to the registrar, or b) this Ann's birthday may be incorrectly stated as 19 Oct, 1830, by a genealogist who mistook this birth record as hers. I suspect that there were not two baby girls named Ann Goss(e), born of two different mothers named Dianna Goss(e) and two fathers named William and Robert Goss(e), and that this record is accurate, and that Ann's borth record has an incorrect father's first name. (Notable: on Ann's brother Solomon's birth record[3], his(/their) mother's name (Dianna) is spelled "Dinah".

There is a death record[4] for an Anne Gosse who died in Torbay, NL on 13 August, 1891, at 78 years old. This would put her birth in 1813, which means it's either not her record, or the birthdate (in this record) is wrong. I suspect that the record refers to another Anne Gosse, although Torbay and Spaniard's Bay are in the same vicinity, the surname Goss(e) isn't so unique - there could be a lot of them there.
