Carl was born on October 19,1839 and christened the same day at Marstad Kaplanboställe in Bjälbo parish, Östergötland, Sweden. His parents were farmhand Anders Jöh. Göthe and his wife, Stina Casja Persdotter. Witnesses Torp. Anders Nilsson, Maja Christiansdotter, farmhand Anders Andersson and maid Anna Holmlund.[1][2]
in 1841, the family left Bjälbo[3] for Allhelgona parish and settled at Fallsberg Östergård.[4]
Charles lived with his parents at Fallsberg Östergärd, Allhelgona parish, until 1860[5] when he moved to Biskopsberga Backegården.[6]
He left the parish for North America on 7-25-1865 at the age of 26, unmarried. [7]
Charles lived in Galesburg, Illinois until 1866 when he moved to Hannibal, Missouri and from there, moved to Kansas in 1867. in 1868, he took the homestead in Kansas which was his home until he died.[8] Charles married Wendla Sophia Johnsson, a domestic servant, in Riley county, Kansas on 10-20-1870.[9] Charles and Wendla settled in Bala, Kansas where they had six children, four of whom survived to adulthood.
Charles was well known in Bala and Leonardville. On July 2, 1908, the Leonardville monitor reported that J.S. Chambers drove his auto into the creek by Chas. Goethe's place and gave it a good washing! [10]
He passed away in March of 1912. The photo on this page of the carriage is his funeral procession and the Leonardville Monitor had this to say about his death:
"Thus, our older men are slowly passing away and in a few years, there will be no more of the fathers of our great state left." [11].
