Coon Descendants, by Frances Davis McTeer, 1979, (pg. 50, 64,): Baptised at St. Peter's, Shepherdstown, Berkeley Co., Virginia (*) on 30 Dec 1798, the son of Eve Gohn/Coon and Jacob Gotschal. He is residing in 1855 with uncle John Coon in Ross Co., Ohio, and residing in 1879 with cousin William Coon in Butte Co., California. ... He was married to Mary Polen, had thirteen children. ... When John Gotschall arrived in California about 1864 he became a part of the Isaac Coon household; he was a cobbler and went from Coon place to Coon place making and repairing shoes. Even after his benefactor's death John Gotschall stayed on in the community and served as almost a surrogate father for Isaac's two youngest boys. [reminiscenses of Stephen G. Lewis, and Jesse G. Coon]. Is buried at Dayton Cemetery.
"On 28 Jan. 1880, William Coon is appointed Administrator of the intestate Estate of John Gotschall; bond was for $1000 with J. N. Turner and E. P. Farnham as Sureties. Inventory by Appraisers R. R. Fimple, Josiah Troxell and Allen Coon, totaled $474.88, including notes, cash and a mare valued at $20. Disbursements totaled $408.23, including $184.23 for lawyers' fees, court and administrative costs, $30 for a coffin, $10 for a burial robe, and $30 for a gravestone. On 15 Nov. 1880 a final balance of $75.11 was left in the hands of the Public Administrator "until the heirs should apply and qualify." (Probate Records of Butte Co., Calif., No. 5).
"A letter in the file dated 11 Dec. 1879 from [son] Jacob Gotschall to William Coon lists as ten "the proper heirs of Father's estate": "William, Isaac and myself of Harlem Springs, Carroll Co., Ohio; Elias of Cofeysburg, Davies Co., Mo.; Nathaniel and Peter of Marion, Grant Co., Ind.; Sarah Rider's heirs, in Indiana "but I cannot tell where about now;" Adam's heirs in Waynesburg, Mark Co. (sic s/b Stark County), Ohio; Margaret Walton in Browning, Schuyler Co., Ill.; and Wesley, "I do not know where he is; some say he is in California; as for my part I do not know where he is."
