Biography

Rhoda Gott was born on October 10, 1800 on Gott's Island, Mount Desert, Hancock County, Province of Maine (now State of Maine). She was the daughter of Nathaniel and Elizabeth (Richardson) Gott. Rhoda married Daniel Hamblen on November 24, 1824.

The New England Historical and Genealogical Register, 1847-2011, Vol. 073, indicates that Rhoda [Gott] Hamblen was admitted as a member of the Mount Desert Church on December 4, 1828. She would have been 28 years old on this date and the mother of 1 child.

In the 1850 US Federal Census record for Placentia Island, Hancock, Maine, Daniel is head of household, occupation "fisherman." The household of Daniel (age 49) and Rhoda (age 50) includes six children, enumerated as follows: Walter (age 22), John (age 18), Lucinda (age 15), Dorrinda (age 13), Daniel (age 10), Huldah C. (age 7). By 1860, Daniel and Rhoda had relocated to Deer Isle. In the 1860 US Federal Census for Deer Isle, Maine, the household of Daniel Hamblen (age 59) included wife Rhoda (age 59) and their two youngest children: Daniel (age 20), Huldah C, (age 17).

Three children of Rhoda and Daniel are also indicated per other sources. Rhoda and Daniel were noted as parents of Durenda (aka Dorrinda) Hamblen b. June 5, 1832, who married Stephen Barbour on June 16, 1856, and who died 2 years later on July 2, 1858, this information gathered from Faxon, p. 77 (source below). From same source, p. 78, Rhoda and Daniel's son, Walter B., born on August 4, 1827, married Lucinda Barbour on June 12, 1858, who was a cousin of the aforementioned Stephen Barbour, Walter and Lucinda noted as residing in Deer Isle, Maine. The 1860 US Federal Census lists Walter and Lucinda living as neighbors to parents Rhoda and Daniel. Rhoda and Daniel are indicated as parents of Caroline Huldah (aka Huldah Caroline) Hamblen in Caroline's death record, thereby establishing Rhoda and Daniel's marriage.

Rhoda passed away in 1878 and is buried at the Forest Cemetery, Stonington, Maine.
