Biography

Disputed Existence

Citing no references or evidence, Edith G Mills claims that Remember, b. c 1626, was a daughter of Charles and "Thankful Gift" Palmer.[1] The article as it's name suggests is a Research in Progress. The first part is from "The Gott Family from 1628." compiled by Wellington Pool the Wenham Town Clerk. This section only mentions the three children baptized in Wenham. The last section which is a standard genealogical summary, was not done by the same person and doesn't say where it's from.

Anderson's Great Migration article on Charles mentions no such daughter.[2] She was not named in Charles' 1668 will. There are no known records which pertain to her.

Disputed Spouse

John Fiske died intestate in 1683. His widow, Remember Fisk, presented an inventory, and distribution was made to wife Remember and children, John, Samuel, Noah, Waite, Elizabeth and Remember. Charles Gott, age 45, testified, at the time, that he had heard Ens. John Fiske tell Lt. Whipple, father of his future daughter in law, that he would give certain land to his son Samuel[3] On this slight piece of evidence an assumption that Remember Fiske was the sister of Charles Gott was built. Reality is that no such relationship is implied by this testimony, only that Gott was acquainted with Whipple or Fiske, which they would have been, living in a small community. In addition, Remember and John Fiske didn't name any children after the alleged Gott father, also named Charles.

Was Remember (____) Fiske Remember Gott?

Anderson's Great Migration 1634-1635, G-H, William Goodhue article (Widow of John Fiske married William Goodhue), does not acknowledge Remember Gott or that she was wife of William[4]

Remember ____

There is a marriage date 10 Dec 1651 in some sources. Some of these just mention the date, but not a surname. This is odd. It might indicate some kind of testimony by a family member to that date. Where did it come from? Not in the Wenham Vital Records. Also looked in Essex Quarterly Court records, Massachusetts Bay Colony Records. Search at Ancestry turned up indexes and Torrey, Search at American Ancestors turned up Torrey. A different John Fiske m. 11 Dec 1651 Sary Wyth (Sarah Wyeth) in Watertown. Could this be where the date came from?

Analysis of Torrey's New England Marriages Entry:
"FISK, John (-1683) & Remember [GOTT] (-1702), dau Charles, m/2 William GOODHUE 1689?; 10 Dec 1651; Ipswich {Reg. 31:221; EIHC 4:21; Abbott 1:65; Fiske (1896) 61, 63; Booth (1910) 188; Wenham Ch. Rec. 77; Essex Ant. 12:101; Ackley-Bosworth 249} " -- The brackets [ ] around the surname GOTT indicate that Torrey "found a reliable source that identified the bride's maiden name with a good deal of confidence,"[5] but note that if he was positive it was correct he would not have put the brackets around the name.

Re: John Fiske 9th mo 1683. Inventory returned by relict and administratrix Remember Fiske. A Deposition by Charles Gott aged about 45 saying that he heard Ensign J Fiske .... [ p. 21]
This is the only known piece of evidence that has led to Charles Gott being identified as the brother of the wife of John Fiske. It is an extremely flimsy piece of evidence

Hannah Baldwin m. Dr. John Fiske b. 1654, Milford, Connecticut, son of John and Remember (Gott) Fiske.
Generally works by Jacobus are fairly reliable, but he did not write this or research it. He edited it.
Where did Ackley-Bosworth get the information? Consultation of the sources listed in Ackley-Bosworth. Some are not available online, but deal with New Haven and would not be relavant to the parents of Dr. John Fiske. [https://archive.org/stream/baldwingenealogy00bald#page/298/mode/2up/ Baldwin Genealogy p. 299 states Hannah Baldwin b 1663 m. Dr. John Fiske, son of John, no wife named.

Conclusion: I think that given the available evidence, we have to agree with Anderson's list of only three children, and that the wife of John Fiske and William Gott was Remember _Unknown_.
