Biography

Outlook - Thursday, 09 January 1941 - Page 1 - John Wilson Goucher - With the passing of Deacon John Wilson Goucher, age 86, the community of Torbrook mourns the loss of one of its oldest and most respected residents. Deacon Goucher was born at Torbrook Mines, Feb. 24, 1854, the son of Reis and Annie Louise (Flanagan) Goucher and save for a few years spent in Montana, lived the whole of his long life in his native district. He will long be remembered not only as a man of highest character, a devoted father and a kind and generous neighbour, but also for his fine record of service in the Baptist Church which he served as a deacon from his 21st year. Deacon Goucher was in poor health for some years preceding his death, Dec. 30th, but he maintained to the end a keen and active interest in his farm, the affairs of the community and the world about him. His wife, the former Elva Irene Woodbury, of Torbrook Mines, predeceased him, as did an elder sister, Mrs. Wilbur Sherburn, of Lyndonville, Vermont. He is survived by a half-sister, Mrs. E.D. Elderkin, of Bute City, Montana, and by nine children, Mrs. Paul Ziegelasch, Long Beach, California; Mrs. John Saunders, Dover, Mass.; Edward R., Middleton; Harold, New York City; Mrs. Hattie Conroy, Natick, Mass.; Chester, Timmons, Ont.; Charles, New York City; Ralph, Dover, Mass.; and Mrs. Noyes Bridgeman, Hopedale, Mass. Funeral service was held at the home conducted by Capt. Rev. P.M. Hamilton, who took as his text, "This earth is not my abiding place." Mr. Frank Martyn and Mrs. Floyd Eichel sang as a duet, "The Old Rugged Cross." The silent message of flowers paid their tribute of high esteem. Interment took place at Torbrook Mines.
