OBITUARY.

Another link in the chain that joins the interesting and picturesque past of tbe Hawkesbury district to the strenuous days of the present has been snapped, This mystic chain has been forged by the associations of man, and gradually those who were of other days are being gathered in by the grim reaper, leaving a sad and aching void in the hearts of relatives and friends who love tbe associations of the times that will be no more. The last to answer the call was good old "Johnny" Gough, a native of the Hawkesbury, who breathed his last at Windsor Hospital early on Friday morning of last week. For the past few years the late John Gough had resided in Sydney, but, with a longing to see again the friends among whom he had grown up and lived for the greater part of his life, he came to Windsor only a day or two before he died. He was very ill, and went into the Hospital. In the days of his prosperity, John Gough was a man of considerable influence in the Hawkeobury district, and did much for the progress of tbe district. He was a prominent member of the Agricultural Association and the Race Club, and was in the forefront of every progressive movement. About 20 years ago he went out of the Fitzroy Hotel, Windsor, where he had been the esteemed boniface for many years. Prior to that he was the licensee of the Royal Hotel, Richmond, and in both towns — and indeed, throughout the length and breadth of the Hawkesbury district — he made troops of friends and never an enemy. His heart was bigger than his purse always, and the amount of good that he did, and the distress that he relieved in his kindly, unostentatious way, cannot be measured with words. He was the eldest son of the late Alexander Gough, who also was a native of the Hawkesbury. The youngest of the family, James, died in August, 1910; now the eldest has answered the last call, and Mr A. R. Gough, of Mudgee, and Mrs C.B. Crowley, of "Wilga" Moree, are the surviving members of the family. The late John Gough was in his 71st year. The funeral took place on Saturday afternoon, when the remains were laid to rest in St. Matthew's Church of England cemetery. In the church the Rev. N. Jenkyn delivered a kindly, sympathetic address. He said that the large concourse of people present was a tribute to the respect that was felt for the late Mr Gough, who had been a good citizen and a true friend. The pallbearers were Ald. G. Davis and Messrs P. Carroll, H. Beecroft and W. Turnbull. Mr J. W. Chandler carried out the duties of undertaker. The relatives of the late Mr Gough express their gratitude to the Rev. N. Jenkyn for his kindly and comforting ministrations to him in his last hours, and wish to assure the rev. gentleman of their appreciation of all he did for the deceased. [1]
