Biography

Birth : Mary GOULD was born on 21 Nov 1845 at Mangrove Creek, NSW.

Baptism : In 1851, the day before her parents were 'officially' married, the Rev. Alfred Glennie baptised Mary, together with her five other brothers and sisters.

Elopement : Eleven years later, on 3 Jun 1862, the Rev. Glennie visited Mangrove on his regular round of the parish and noted in his journal: "... I turned down into Mangrove & getting a little refreshment of bread, milk and honey at Gould ... I was grieved to find that an elopement had taken place a few days previously to my reaching Mangrove. A man named Sylvester had enticed away Philip Gould's daughter Mary. O sad sequel to her confirmation only a few months ago."[1]

It is likely that Mary then had a son in 1863, although I have not found a birth record for him. A male 'Marrin' appears in later records: Arthur Charles George MARRIN (1863 - 1933). He was born in the Hawkesbury River District some six years prior to Mary's marriage to Captain Francis MARRIN. It is therefore likely that he is a son of Mary's by a different father - quite possibly the mysterious "Sylvester". Given that the son took the surname Marrin, rather than Gould, it appears that Francis adopted him as his son. Of course, it is also possible that Arthur is a son of Francis by a previous wife/partner, but this seems less likely.

Marriage : She married Francis MARRIN on 25 May 1869 in Sydney, NSW.[2][3]

The couple had six children together:

Tragedy : In the late 1870's, the Marrin family fell deeply into debt and Captain Francis MARRIN had to declare bankruptcy, losing both his home and his vessel in the process. See the Biography of Francis MARRIN for details.

On 12 May 1888, Francis died about 40 miles downstream of Borroloola on the Macarthur River in the Northern Territory. Crew members of the vessel reported that the was likely murdered by 'Blacks' whilst searching for suitable ballast. His body was never found and Mary was advised of his death by a letter from the local police, dated 11 June 1888.[4]

Death : Mary died in 1893, only 5 years later, in Queensland.[5]

Open Questions

When did the family move from Mangrove to Camden Haven and then to Townsville? What caused Francis to go bankrupt? Why did he end up captaining a small vessel on the Macarthur River, 1000's of miles away from home?? Had he abandoned the family or was there no other work?
