Lydia was born in 1858. She was the daughter of George Gould and Hannah Lewis. Her father had emigrated to New Zealand with her mother in 1850 and Lydia was born 8 years later. When she was about two, however, her mother Hannah died. However her father remarried and her stepmother Elizabeth then raised her.
Her father became a successful and wealthy businessman in Christchurch.
Lydia married Alfred Selanders Otterson in 1878 when she was about 20 years old. Alfred is described as a gentleman on the Electoral roll of 1896.
She passed away in 1937 when she was 79 years old in London, England. She was a widow when she died and living at 8 St Georges Court in Kensington.
