Biography

ABIJAH GOULD, b. at Chelmsford, 12 Dec 1735 son of Adam Gould and Elizabeth Butterfield;[1] d. at Hollis, NH, 2 Jan 1818;[2] m. at Chelmsford, 29 Oct 1766,[3] Sarah Spaulding, b. at Nottingham West, NH, 9 Aug 1740 daughter of Phineas and Mary (Hamlet) Spalding;[4][5] Sarah d. at Rochester, NY 1821 at her son’s home.[6]

Abijah and Sarah resided in New Ipswich, Temple, and Hollis, New Hampshire. On 12 February 1767, Abijah Gould and Sarah his wife then of Windham joined Sarah’s siblings Daniel Spalden, Mary Spalden, Lydia Spalden, and Phineas Spalden in a conveyance of a 61-acre tract in Nottingham West to Robert Stewart.[7]

Abijah was of Temple in 1777 when he enlisted in the company of Capt. Gershom Drury.[8] The company was under the regimental command of Lt. Col. Thomas Heald and marched to reinforce the Continental army at Ticonderoga. Abijah was credited with three days service.[9]

Abijah headed a household of four persons at Temple in 1790: one male 16 and over, two males under 16, and one female.[10] On 15 April 1794, Abijah Goold husbandman of Temple with his wife Sarah, in consideration of £150, conveyed an 80-acre tract in Temple which was the tenth lot of the first range to Daniel Clark of Townsend, Massachusetts.[11]

The family was two persons at Hollis in 1810: one male 45 and over and one female 45 and over.[12] On 11 November 1815, Abijah Goold and his wife Sarah of Hollis, in consideration of $900, conveyed to Phillips Wood of Hollis a tract of land in the northerly part of Hollis.[13]

Abijah and Sarah were parents of five children.

iii Abijah Gould (1771-1776), b. at Temple, 11 Nov 1771; d. at Temple, 15 Mar 1776.

iv Abijah Gould (1777-abt.1848), b. at Temple, 20 May 1777; d. at Rochester, NY, about 1848; m. 1st at Hollis, 10 Oct 1804, MARY SHATTUCK, b. at Hollis, 9 Mar 1776 daughter of Zachariah and Elizabeth (Farley) Shattuck; Mary d. at Hollis, 7 May 1806. Abijah m. 2nd at Hollis, 17 Sep 1807, MARY TUCKER SARGENT, b. at Milford, NH, 2 Oct 1785 daughter of Ebenezer and Mary (Marsh) Sargent; Mary d. at Rochester, NY, Oct 1874. Abijah was a clockmaker.
