Biography

Jane was born in 1851 to Joseph Gould and Emma Tomkins in Witney, Oxfordshire, England. [1] The British Census of 1851 does not mention her by name shows her as an infant of the expected age. [2] The family was living in Duckington, Oxfordshire The household consisted of her parents and sisters and a nurse. Jane emigrated to the United States with her family, arriving on the ship James Nesmith at the Port of New York from Liverpool 19 Sep 1853. [3] She is listed as an infant and would have been roughly two years old at the time of the voyage. The family was living in Elgin, Illinois at the time of the 1860 US Census. [4] She was estimated to be nine years old at that time. Both of her parents are listed on the Census and were living. According to her father's obituary, her mother died later in 1860. He remarried the following year. Her step mother gave birth in early January 1862. In August 1862 her father was inducted in the Union Infantry. He returned to the family in very poor health in 1865. She would have been 14 at that time.

It is not clear when she left home but the 1870 US Census found her living as a boarder and working in the local watch factory, in the household of James and Hellen Truesdell. [5] She is listed as Jannie or Jennie Gould and 18 years old. This suggests a birth date of 1851 or 1852, which is consistent with this profile. In records after 1870 she appears as Jennie Gould. Her sister Anna also appears in the Truesdell household but as a daughter and having taken the name Truesdell. The place of birth for both sisters is listed as England.

Jennie married Alfred H. Webster 6 Apr 1876 in Monroe County, Wisconsin, probably in Sparta[6] Her sister Louisa married Frank E. Webster the same day, likely in the same place. [7] The two Websters were brothers and sons of Peter Emerson Webster and Laura Esther Tower Webster.

Alfred Webster was a farmer, roughly Jennie's age. They settled near Angelo or Sparta, Wisconsin. By the time of the 1880 US Census they had two sons, Herbert Emerson and Frank Gould Webster, three years old and an infant, respectively. [8] The family was still living in the same household in 1900. [9] Both sons were working as day laborers.

Jennie and Alfred retired to Montana by 1910, [10] but returned to Angelo by 1920. [11] Her sister, Sarah E. Lardner Webster was recently widowed and was living with Jennie and Alfred in 1920 and is found in their household.

Alfred died in 1926 and Jennie was living Sarah in Angelo at the time of the 1930 US Census. [12] Sarah died in 1931. Jennie died 28 May 1935 in Seattle, Washington [13] and was returned to Sparta for burial. [14]
