Biography

Louisa was born in Chipping Norton, Oxfordshire, England to Joseph Gould and Emma Tomkins, in 1850. [1] She was one year at the time of the 1851 British Census and living at Ducklington, Oxfordshire. [2] She immigrated to the United States with her parents and sisters on the ship James Nesmith, which left Liverpool and arrived at the Port of New York on 19 Sep 1853. [3] She is described as an infant and would have been three years old--a toddler. She was 10 by the 1860 US Census, which found her with her family living in Elgin, Illinois. [4] Both of her parents were alive and listed on the 1860 Census. However, according to her father's obituary, her mother died by the end of 1860 and he remarried the following year. Her step mother gave birth in early January 1862. In August 1862 her father was inducted in the Union Infantry. He returned to the family in very poor health in 1865. She would have been 15 at that time. It is not clear when she left home, but the 1870 Census found her, at 20, as a domestic worker in the household of A.E. Bentley near Elgin. [5]

Louisa married Frank E. Webster 6 Apr 1876 in Monroe County, Wisconsin, probably in Sparta. [6] Her sister Jennie married Alfred H. Webster the same day, likely in the same place. [7] The two Websters were brothers and sons of Peter Emerson Webster and Laura Esther Tower Webster.

Louisa's husband was a farmer. The couple lived near Sparta, Wisconsin. The 1880 US Census found them living together with her sister Sarah Lardner who was a dressmaker. [8] Their son Ray L. Webster was born in 1882. In 1891 Louisa gave birth to a daughter, Jennie L. Webster. Frank was working as well driller, and both children were living at home and going to school in 1900. [9] In 1920 Frank's occupation was listed as contractor. Jennie was still living at home and working as a teacher. [10]

Louisa died in 1929 at age 78 and is buried in Sparta. [11] Frank died three years later at 76, in 1932.
