Charles was born in 1844[1] having been christened on 17 April at Bampton, Oxfordshire[2][3]. He was the son of John Gould and Anne Gardiner.
Charles, his mother Ann and five siblings, left Liverpool on the Anglia on 25 September 1849. They arrived in Sydney, New South Wales on 22 February 1850[4]. They then took the Antares to the Port Phillip district arriving on 10 March, meeting their father who had been transported two years earlier[5].
