Biography

He was born on 28 Jan 1855 in St Boniface Parish, Red River Settlement (now part of Manitoba, Canada) and his parents were Josephte Charette (Siveright) and Alexis Goulet.

His older brother was the Métis martyr, Elzear Goulet (1836-1870). [1]

Maxime was educated at St.Boniface College and spent the next five years in the service of the Hudson’s Bay company.

Maxime Goulet married on 01 July 1873 in Saint Boniface to Elise Genthon, daughter of Josephte (Marion) and Joseph Genthon.

In December 1878 he was elected to represent the French Party for the riding of St.Vital in the Manitoba Legislature.

He then ran in the riding of La Verendrye as an independent conservative, winning in the 1879 and 1883 elections.

He served as Minister of Agriculture from 07 January 1880 to 16 November 1881.

On 30 March 1889 he left St.Boniface with Ambroise Lepine, Michel Dumas and Jules Marion on the way to the Paris World’s Fair to take part in the Wild West Show. They took two Red River Carts, two trains of dogs and a buffalo gun. They built a log house at the Fair accompanied by Buffalo Bill Cody.

In 1891 Goulet Street in central St.Boniface, Manitoba, Canada was named in honor of Maxime Goulet.

He taught for twenty years and accompanied his brother, Roger Goulet, on the Metis Scrip Commission.

He died on 17 Jan 1932 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.

Goulet-955 and Goulet-705 appear to represent the same person because: dups with same name and same birth date so they should be merged per wikitree policy. Thanks
