George was born in Carmarthen, Carmarthenshire, Wales before the 2nd of May 1793 when he was baptised at St Peters parish church in Carmarthen. He is the son of the well known Carmarthen chemist/druggist William Goulstone and his wife Billah (Wright) Goulstone who moved to Carmarthen from the Bristol area a short time before George's birth.
A year prior to his marriage to Ann Williams on the 19th January 1817 at St Mary's church Llanllwch Carmarthenshire, George fathered a base son John Goulstone with Sarah George. This son John Goulstone was baptised at St Peters church on the 16th February 1816. Sadly John died and was buried on the 2nd January 1818 at St Peters aged just 1 year.
Following his marriage to Ann Williams, they had one son that is known about, Frederick Wright Goulstone born on the 20th November 1817.
George had another base child with Rachel Jones born on the 5th October 1839 and baptised as George Goulstone on the 8th December 1839 at St Michael's church Newchurch Carmarthenshire. Sadly George junior died in February of 1841 and was buried a t St Michael's Newchurch on the 9th February.
Ann passed away in October of 1840 and was buried at St Peters church on the 30th of October.
As there is no census data before Ann's death, it is not known without further documentary evidence whether George and Ann remained together prior to her death. What is known is that George remarried within two months of Ann's death to Sarah George at Abergavenny in Monmouthshire Wales some 70 miles from Carmarthen. Sarah is very likely the same Sarah George that had a base son with George in 1816, as in the 1851 census, Sarah's birthplace is recorded as Carmarthen as is George's birthplace.
George died in the fourth quarter of 1856 at Abergavenny, Monmouthshire, Wales.
There can be some debate about who George's father was as the baptism register only identifies him as William. Two William's fit the bill. The first is William Goulstone and his wife Billah, The second is William Garrat Goulstone with an unknown wife or that George is a base son of W G Goulstone.
Clues as to who the father is are almost non existant until the death of George's son Frederick Wright Goulstone in 1876. There is an obituary in the welsh Journal Yr Haul in September 1876 for Frederick. The translated version of the obituary is:-
Goulstone — July. 25, at Carmarthen Infirmary, Frederick Goulstone, grandson of Mr. Goulstone, formerly a well known practitioner of this town, aged 59 years.
The statement that Frederick is the grandson of William Goulstone the well known practitioner of Carmarthen town is proof that William Garrat Goulstone is not George's father as his practice as a chemist/druggist was Llandovery where he was equally as well known as his father was in Carmarthen
