Biography

William was born in Napier in 1863. He was the son of Henry Goulstone and Mary Sayer Cox.

Occupation: Dentist.

William attended Nelson College along with older brother Newton Henry Goulstone. They are both listed there in 1878. He was later listed on the school's website as "Dentist, Onehunga Auckland."

William and his carpenter older brother, Newton, went farming in Opotiki. According to the local history book, "Their Greatness", Newton and William were the first settlers on Paerata Ridge, building a home there which they named "Glendower". They later lost this home to a fire.

When Newton married in 1889, William probably moved out of Glendower to make way for the new couple. It was not long before William was himself married: his bride was Rose Lavinia Galbraith and they wed in 1891.

Rose and William had two children, Ella, and Jack, before tragedy struck: Rose died in 1901 of pneumonia aged just 39.

WIlliam married again in 1904. His second wife was English-born Sarah Jane Ward. They were married at St Peter's Church, Onehunga, by Canon John Haselden (1854-1927) William was 40 and Sarah was 42. It was Sarah's first marriage. Witnesses were William's father, Henry, and half-sister, Cecil Goulstone.

William was on the National Reserve Unit Committee for Onehunga in 1915.[1]

In 1918, this notice appeared in the Auckland Star: "DEATHS. BROWN.—On March 8. at the residence of Mr W. F. Goulstone. Symonds Street, Onehunga; John Brown; aged 82 years."[2]

William's son, Jack, was killed in WWI by sniper fire and is buried in France.

Sarah died in 1937. William died four years later and they are buried together at Waikaraka Cemetery, Auckland. [3]
