Andrew was born in 1829. He passed away in 1921. [1] Andrew Govier was born on February 11, 1829 in Crediton, Devon, England. He became a good Episcopalian and a fair student, being taught by his father, mother, and the rector of the Thelbridge Parish Church. He was apprenticed to a tailor from 1843 to 1850 during which time he was further schooled in the "three R's" and business methods.
Until 1862 he worked as a journeyman tailor in Romansleigh. Here he met Mary Sanders, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Sanders. On September 30, 1855 their wedding was solemnized in the Romansleigh Parish Church. The rector, W. F. Cresswell, officiated at the ceremony. Four children; Anna, Emma, John S., and George Sanders, were born to this marriage.
Andrew and his family left England and sailed for America in July 1862, but didn't arrive in Lancaster, Wisconsin until the middle of August. He soon opened a tailor shop in Lancaster.
On October 2, 1864 his dear wife, Mary, and his father, John, both died. His young children were ages two to seven at the time. Two years later Andrew married Bertha Elizabeth [Weller] Tobler, a civil war widow, on December 25, 1866 in Trinity Episcopal Church in Platteville, Wisconsin. They had four children; Ida Luella, William Edwin, Lucius Grant, and Albert Lewis.
In the spring of 1869 Andrew moved his family and business to Fennimore, Wisconsin, where he operated a tailor shop for nearly half a century. The business never made big money, but with the aid of a large garden and chickens, pigs, and two or three cows he raised his family creditably.
Andrew was only five feet three and a half inches tall, but he was very well built, quick, and active. In England he was a "catch as catch can" wrestler of noted skill in his locality. He was industrious, honest, frugal, and orderly; qualities that usually spell success in business. He didn't understand American ways and people so his adaptably wasn't high geared, but he is remembered as an excellent gardner and a good tailor. At one time he owned a one hundred sixty acre farm in the fruit belt near Willow Springs, Missouri. He also owned another quarter section of land just east of his mother's farm and home in North Lancaster Township.
On October 12, 1921 Andrew died and was interred in Prairie Cemetery in Fennimore, Wisconsin. His age was ninety-two years, eight months, and one day.
Notes for Mary SANDERS Mary Sanders (Wife Of Andrew Govier)
Mary Sanders, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Sanders, was born April 10, 1830 in King's Nympton, Devon, England. She had two sisters, Martha and Ann, and two brothers, George and William. Her father, John, was a large well built man and worked as a tender of the "Queen's" highways.
Before her marriage Mary was a lady's maid and once had offers as an actress, but her parents objected. On September 30, 1855 she and Andrew Govier were married by the rector, W. F. Cresswell in the parish church in Romansleigh, Devon, England. Three children, Anna, Emma, and John S., were born in Romansleigh.
Her father, John, died in 1861 and rests in Romansleigh Cemetery. After he died Mary's mother went to live with her sister, Ann [Sanders] Webber and her husband, James, in the suburbs of London. This was her home for many years. Her brother, William, immigrated to Batavia, New York, where his wife soon died leaving five motherless children.
Mary was an attractive woman of five feet three inches tall and slim with very long brown hair and large brown expressive eyes. She was pregnant with their fourth child when she, Andrew, and their three young children left England in July 1862 and sailed for America. They arrived in Lancaster, Wisconsin the middle of August. Soon her husband, Andrew, opened a tailor shop.
Their fourth child, George Sanders, was born September 12, 1862 in Lancaster. The terrible steerage conditions on the boat and the strange primitive life in America were hard on a delicate woman unused to roughing it. Mary developed diabetes and only lived two years after coming to America, leaving four children ages two through seven years. She passed away on October 2, 1864 and was buried in Hillside Cemetery in Lancaster.
