I have a John Gow, born to parents James Gow and Mary Buchanan of "Nothor" Blairour. Baptised 11 Jan 1730 [1]
The Gow family is mentioned in the ''Full text of Strathendrick, and its inhabitants from early times" as long time elders in the community. Here is a snippet from this text.
REV. GEORGE BUCHANAN.
I739-J742-
Mr. Buchanan was no sooner settled in the parish than he took steps to have the manse rebuilt. Accordingly a joint meeting took place between a committee of the Presbytery of Dunbarton and the heritors of Drymen on the 29th January 1740. The following are the Minutes, as recorded in the Session Records :
"There met the following members of the Presbytery of Dunbartan — M rs - James Bain, George Sinclair, and William Brown, in conjunction with Mr. George Buchanan, minister of the gospel at Drymen. The heretors of the said parish being called, compeared the Laird of Gorthie in name of his grace the Duke of Montrose, William Stewart of Finnich, John Gow of Drumquhasle, James Gow of Blairour, And they being interrogate what they had done in relation to the rebuilding of the manse, it was represented to the ministers then present, in name of the heretors, by the laird of Gorthie, that once and again all the most considerable heretors had met in order to stint themselves, effeiring to their valuations, but that so full a meeting as could be wished for could never be got in regard several of the smaller heretors never attended these meetings, and as those who met had no legal authority to stint the absent heretors, there- fore he moved the presbytery would take the affair wholly in their own hands, and to have all speedy and legal steps toward the rebuilding of the manse." Nothing, however, was done, for very soon after the meeting, painful rumours as to the moral character of the minister began to circulate in the parish and neighbour- hood, and at a meeting of the Presbytery of Dunbarton 5th November 1740 Mr. Buchanan was accused of immorality with a "free woman," one Margaret Simpson. He was ordered to take steps to clear his character, but he not only did not succeed in doing so, but he was obliged, at subsequent Presbyteries, to acknowledge other lapses. On the 1st April 1741, therefore, the Presbytery suspended him from the ministry, and on the ist September of the same year they deposed him.
in 1751, John Gow is mentioned again at a church meeting - and John Gow, portioner of Drumquhassle.
On the 17th of September 1765 John Gow is mentioned again - John Gow, for West Drumquhassle and Drumbeg. [2]
A lot of research was done to prove the connection to this gentleman even though John was quite well renowned in his time. I believe that James & John Gow above are brothers. The John above I feel can not be Alexanders father John as I believe he was baptised 11th Jan 1730. In 1740 as mentioned above John Gow is the portioner of Drumquhasle, not possible I feel at the age of 10.
At the time John married Grizal in 1769, he is listed as living in Blairour, Drymen and on Alexander's birth record he lists himself as a "Portioner" of Blairour. Portioner, meaning owner of a small plot of land. Grizel's fathers name is Alexander deceased, late of "Milefead" [3] John & Grizal have the following children. Alexander 1777, George 1780, Grizal 1781, James 1775, Mary 1773, Walter 1784, William 1780 and Andrew 1787.
So not to be confused by someone who might read this later down the track, there seems to be several properties that were owed by John Gow and they are Drumbeg and Drumquhassie. Both of these properties were eventually owned by James Gow, John's grandson. They are both still in existence today (2016) on Grartness Road, Drymen, Stirlingshire in Scotland.
