Biography

From Genealogical and Personal History of Western Pennsylvania:

The American ancestor of this line of the Scotch family of Gow, David, came to the United States in 1840, the vessel on which he had engaged passage landing at New York on August 18. His Scotland home had been near Dundee, county of Forfar, and he had been there educated, in that land mastering the art of carpet weaving as practiced on looms. For a time he resided in Manayunk, Philadelphia, being there employed in a cotton factory, in 1843 moving to Pittsburgh, where for four or five years he was occupied in different lines, then going to Kentucky. In this state his death occurred at an advanced age, and he is buried on his farm, his wife, Grace Graham, having died previously, her birth-place the same as his. Children of David and Grace (Graham) Gow: Catherine, John, of whom further, Marjorie, Jeannette, David, Grace, William Pervins, a soldier in the Union army in the war between the states, met his death in the fighting about Winchester, Virginia.

David was Christened on March 7, 1800 so assuming he was born around that time.

The passenger ship on which David and his family arrived landed at New York on August 17, 1840 (not August 18th as in the Bio). The ship name was Stephen Whitney. I added a picture of the part of the list with the Gow family.

Research Notes

David is living in New Concord, Calloway County Kentucky in the 1800 Census with his daughter Janette and son David. Janette died in Dripping Springs, Calloway County in October 1886 and by that time her father is deceased. So, sometime between the 1880 census and October 1886, David died. According to the Biography, he is buried on his farm.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with David by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with David:
