Biography

William was born on 26 October 1776 in Wake County, North Carolina.[1]

He married Charlotte Garland on 15 January 1802 in Davidson County, Tennessee.[2]

He was a Methodist preacher. In 1803, he heard Lorenzo Dow preach and was so moved that he professed his faith.[3] He was licensed to preach by Bishop William McKendree of the Methodist Church.[4] William's church, Gower's Chapel, was across from his home, and was used as a school on weekdays.[5] He was also a farmer.[6]

He died on 11 October 1851.[7][8] His funeral was conducted by John B. McFerrin on 12 October 1851.[9] He was buried in Gower Cemetery, located on Gower Road, Nashville, Davidson County, Tennessee, behind the Centenary Methodist Church.[10]
