Nancy and her family traveled down the Tennessee River with the Donelson Party. On 8 March 1780, when they reached the Suck, they were attacked by Native Americans. Nancy took the helm of her father's boat and steered it. She was shot in the upper thigh, but no one realized that she had been wounded until after the danger had passed, when her mother noticed blood on her clothes.[1]
