Biography

Birth and baptism

Samuel was born about 1834 having been baptised in Ashby de la Zouche, the neighbouring town to Packington, on 1 October 1834, for father Samuel Grace and mother Hannah[1]

Residence and occupation

An 1841 England Census has Hannah Grace (35) residing in Nether Street, Packington, Derbyshire, which is in the Ashby de la Zouch registration district. Based on rounding down to the nearest multiple of '5' yrs, her possible birth year range is indicated to be from 1802 to 1806. Also present were her 3 children Maria (9), Samuel (5) and Elizth (4), as well as a Samuel Middleton (75) and Ann Middleton (28), Sarah Clark (40) and Ann Hatchett (35)[2][3].

By the time of the 1851 England Census, he gave his age as 16 years when he was an apprentice residing in the home of Sarah Owston (33) Head, Widow and Grocer, born Gotham, Nottinghamshire in Market Street, Ashby De La Zouch, Leicestershire, England. Samuel also stated that he was born in Ashby De La Zouch, which is also correct from the District aspect[4]. Maria Grace (b.c. 1832) is shown to be a sister of Samuel and as a Granddaughter of Fanny Rickford on another 1851 England Census that also gives her birth place as Ashby De La Zouch, Leicestershire[5]. However, doubt has been cast on the validity of the claim and amendment to the Census form as the grandmother was a spinster according to FindmyPast record at the relevant time.

Marriage and family

On 20 September 1855 at St Mark, Myddleton Square, Islington, England, Samuel, a Bachelor of Full Age and Grocer, of Soley Terrace, father Samuel a Gentleman, married Elizabeth Pearson, Spinster of Full Age, of Beeston, Notts., father John Pearson, Gentleman[6][7].

Based on the following 1861 and 1871 England Census' and the inscription on his tombstone, they would have 5 children. First was a son, also named Samuel, born about 1858/9, followed by James Leslie Grace born 24 June 1862, then Fanny Parker Grace, born in about October 1862, died 17 April 1866 aged 4 yrs and 7 mths and Oliver Pearson Grace, born in April 1868, died 29 July 1868 aged 3 mths (see 'Death and burial' section for the source). Between Fanny and Oliver was Annie E. Grace born about 1866. BUT either Fanny Parker or James Leslie must be incorrect in some way with birth dates only 6 months apart.

Residence and occupation

The 1861 England Census has 26 yrs old Samuel, a Grocer and wife 27 yrs old Elizabeth Grace with 2 yrs old son Samuel and 2 House Servants resident at 9 Wesley Street in Liverpool. Samuel gave his birth place as Packington, Leicestershire, with son Samuel born in Liverpool[8].

In the 'Liverpool, England, Electoral Registers, 1832-1970', Samuel Grace gave his address at 9 Wesley Street, Toxteth Park, with a shop and warehouse at 2 Berry Street[9]. This was from 1862 to the 1865-1866 register, when his shop & warehouse had moved to 16 Elliot Street.

By the time of the 1871 England Census, when Samuel was not on it at their residence at 4 Tue Brook Terrace, his wife Elizabeth Grace (38), married and a Grocer's Wife, born Beeston, Notts., was looking after 2 more of their children, James L Grace (8) a Scholar and Annie E Grace (5), both born in Liverpool, Lancashire[10].

Death and burial

Samuel Grace's 'England & Wales, Civil Registration Death Index, 1837-1915' has his death registered in the January quarter of 1874 in West Derby, Lancashire, United Kingdom. His age at death is given as 39 years. This is confirmed in the 'UK, Records of the Removal of Graves and Tombstones, 1601-2007' with the specific date of death as 12 February 1874 and the burial place as Liverpool, Lancashire, England. He was reintered in St James' Cemetery in 1939 and described as the much loved husband of Elizabeth Grace the Widow and father of Fanny Parker Grace, died 17 April 1866 aged 4 yrs and 7 mths and Oliver Pearson Grace died 29 July 1868 aged 3 mths[11]. He died at Tue-Brook-Terrace, Liverpool, Lancashire, England on the above date as in his Probate record. His death was also published in the Buckinghamshire Herald of Aylesbury on 28 February 1874 with: Samuel Grace only surviving grandson of the late James Grace of .... , Aylesbury - his death aged 39 at Liverpool on 12th instant; and again in the Liverpool Weekly Courier of 14 February 1874 with: Death of Mr Samuel Grace of Hardman St aged 39 at his residence in Tuebrook Tce.

Probate

The Will was proved by 4 named men including George Peet, Grocer, and Elizabeth Grace of Tue-Brook-terrace Widow the Relict. Effects under 7,000 Pounds Sterling[12].

When you wrote "You are talking about a different Grace family than to mine, including Samuel Grace, being no relation to my tree", what were you referring to Anne?

I've put some detail into your Samuel Grace (abt.1834-1874) - 3101. The Ashby de la Zouche township is next door to Packington! Marjorie

I forgot to put my name on the message from You, which is me Marjorie, my apologies. Please show me a record that has "Eliza (Fanny) Grace 1772-1873 born Rickford" with the forename Eliza. I've seen your communications asking for help on facebook that mention a Death Notice for Fanny and wondered if I could see it please? I am also well versed in the greater Grace family of W.G.Grace. It is the connections you have made that are unclear to me at the moment. My comments as 'You' above are still valid. It is a minefield with 'Samuel Grace' such a popular name!

Hello Marjorie,

Thank you for your comment. You are talking about a different Grace family than to mine, including Samuel Grace 1802 being no relation to my tree. I had incorrect information saying my Samuel was 1802 born. The 1802 Samuel belongs to the unrelated tree.

My Samuel unknown birth and parents died 1974, husband of Hannah Middleton.

My Samuel is the grandson of Fanny (Rickford) Grace.

Fanny Rickford 1773-1872. Her marriage to James Grace was 1816. FHL Film number 1999056 Reference ID item 19 p7.

Cannot find records of Samuel (-1838) birth but maybe son of James Grace from an earlier relationship

Fanny Grace death notice says widow of James Grace and grandson Samuel Grace (1834-1874) of Hardman St, Liverpool. This Samuel being the son of Samuel (-1838) Samuel 1834 has a sister Maria (1831-1856) who appears in the 1851 Census with Elia Grace as her granddaughter.

Samuel 1834 is the father of my great grandfather, James Leslie Grace 1862-

Best regards, Anne

Samuel Grace (1834-1874) was not the son of Samuel Grace (1802-1838) as you have it, with no sources to justify any of the information. The latter should be removed to start with. In fact, Samuel Grace born 1802, seems to have lived to 1890 and married Mary Ann Holt! Among their children was a Samuel Grace b.c. 1838, not 1834, according to the 1841 and 1851 England Census'.

Correct. Am still trying to locate the birth of Samuel who died 1838 who is the father of Samuel Grace 1835-1874.

You mention the following. I cannot see the link for this. Are you able to send this to me please.

It is interesting to read it saying Samuel only surviving grandson of James Grace on two occasions.

Buckinghamshire Herald of Aylesbury on 28 February 1874 with: Samuel Grace only surviving grandson of the late James Grace of .... , Aylesbury - his death aged 39 at Liverpool on 12th instant; and again in the Liverpool Weekly Courier of 14 February 1874 with: Death of Mr Samuel Grace of Hardman St aged 39 at his residence in Tuebrook Tce.
