Granville Grady was born about 1816[1] in Kentucky[1]. He was the husband[1] of Paulina.

His land was along an established Underground Railroad route between Niles, Michigan and Schoolcraft, Michigan. It is likely his family may have given aid to freedom seekers in the late 1850s and early 1860s along with other free and self-emancipated Blacks and white Quakers in the area with shared abolitionist values.[2]
