Family

George Graham, Vth of Claverhouse was born in or before 1600, date estimated from the date of his parent's marriage in 1596, the second son of Sir William Graham, IVth of Claverhouse [1] and Agnes Lundie. He succeeded after the death of his brother William in 1619. [2]

Marriage

He married Mariot Fotheringham, daughter of Thomas Fotheringham, 9th of Powrie and Barbara Scott, in 1620. [3]

Properties

There was a Sasine on charter on 30 June 1623, of Colin Campbell of Lundie, in favor of Sir William Grahame of Claverhouse and George Grahame, his lawful son and heir apparent, of the lands of Balkello [5] He and his father received a charter, on 7 June 1628, by Robert Clayhills of Baldovie to Sir William Graham of Claverhouse, in liferent, and Mr George Graham, his eldest son, in fee, of the lands of Hiltoun of Craigie [6]

In contemplation of the marriage of his son William to Magdalene Carnegie, George became bound to infeft his William and his male heirs in the lands of Balkello, Polkemback, Poleack, Dealing, Calgary and Schillhill in the Parish of Tealling and county of Forf, the lands of Polgeavie in the shire of Perth and many other lands [7]

Political Life

When James VI visited Scotland in 1616, George was one of the Justices of the Peace in Forfarshire charged to make suitable preparations for the King and Court whilst in Angus. He was admitted as burgess and guild brother of Dundee, 30 March 1620. [8]

On 29 July 1644 he received £4000 Scots advanced to him by the Commitee of Estates . [9]

He is named as one of the cautioners (advisor/guarantor) of James, Marquess of Montrose on 28 January 1645 [4]

Death

He died about April 1645 [8]
