He was educated at Eton College, Windsor, Berkshire, England.

He succeeded to the title of 2nd Baron Graham of Belford, co. Northumberland on 30 September 173[5].

He succeeded to the title of 2nd Earl Graham on 30 September 1731[5].

He succeeded to the title of 5th Earl of Kincardine on 7 January 1742.

He succeeded to the title of 11th Lord Graham on 7 January 1742.

He succeeded to the title of 9th Earl of Montrose on 7 January 1742.
